I'm giving ff another try after its spent much time building up dust in my closet. When I try to start the game, i get the following message: "This application has failed to start because zlib-1.1.3.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I remember this problem began when I had installed the character tool.
I dont want to reinstall because I lost my cd key and it would suck to have to reinstall ffx and everything that i already have all over again.
Thanks in advance for any help whatsoever!
You might want to check your FF directory for that DLL. If it's not there, search the CD for the file and copy it over to your FF directory. If that's the only problem, you would be okay. The worry is that there are more files that are missing or that the installation is corrupt in some way that keeps the game from finding those files, in which case a re-install might be your best shot. Re-installing the FX and so on isn't such a huge issue, since you can keep your old DAT files and use FFEdit to merge them after you get things running again.
Further, this dll; zlib-1.1.3.dll is available for free download (in several versions). It is not an Irrational component. If you download a version of zlib that is more up to date than 1.1.3, rename it 'zlib-1.1.3.dll' and it should work.
Thanks for the help! I tried copying the file from the ff cd and everything seemed fine until I tried danger rooming. When it's almost fully loaded the game crashes and this message pops up: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library: Runtime Error! Program (my game directory) abnormal program termination". Does this elucidate the problem at all?
Actually, the zlib seems to be fine. It looks like I'm actually having other problems. Some of my custom chars have a value of 1240 in the dangerroom and no picture is shown for them. When I use one of them either as a hero or villain I get the results I posted above.
