Okay...I know it's possible cause I've seen Rev do it on a few of his things...but how do ye do it?
Not sure if this is right since it's been a while since I've done it, but I think you copy the whole mesh, (let's say VX_Human_Torch), and paste it into the scene_node of the mesh that you want the FX on. Then, (I think) you use the 'remove branch' tool on the male_basic node of the VX_Human_Torch.
Hopefully someone can correct me, cause it's really been a while since I have done this. Sorry DJ.
