Title: Artistic Challenge 14 (Amalgam) Check Out the Art!
Post by: Pyroclasm on February 20, 2007, 01:38:21 PM
Here is the new Artistic Challenge thread!  This time around we're doing Amalgams.  (If you don't know what it is, the Amalgam is in reference to the Marvel/DC crossover event that featured characters created by mashing two existing characters together.)

1) Sign up by nominating a Marvel & a DC character.  (They must be characters not previously named in this thread, so name them before someone else does!)  If you name a DC character that is not very well known, please include a link or two for reference images.
2) On March 1st I will randomly create assignments for each participant from a list of the nominations.  For this version of the Amalgam challenge, you will keep the Marvel character you name.  The DC character will be randomized.  The next time we do this it will be the reverse.
3) Start posting as soon as your image is done.

This challenge ends on the 31st.  If you want join this challenge anytime in March, just name your Marvel character and I will give you a random DC assignment., PM me so I don't miss your post.  (You can even sign up again if you did your first pic and want another go.) After Mar. 31st, I will not give out assignments.

Rules:
1) It must be your art.  No editing of other people's art.  (This includes recolors, collages, sprite edits, etc.)
2) Nothing from Freedom Force or City of Heroes/Villains.  (Both have their own sections on FR.)
3) Although technically not a work in progress thread, you can update the image in your post at any time.
4) Forum rules still govern subject matter.

Remember this is open to artists of all levels and all styles!

Check out the Art

Today is the last day to get your DC nominations included in the sign up pool!

I will roll up the assignments tomorrow (probably around midnight or so tonight).

Remember, although the challenges end at the end of the month, you can still post your image after that date.  That date really just indicates when the next one starts. ;)

Reep has to blend a thunder god with  a catterpillar who speaks via an olde tyme radio around its "neck"! Hee!

As for the easiest, mine's not a huge stretch... USAgent and Red Star - both have star-related themes and strong ties to their nationality.

Reep... I don't know...     This could be funny...

C6's will turn out awesome, though I can't think of two characters with more different personalities!

Post by: Pyroclasm on March 01, 2007, 03:25:57 PM
UFB, I think that's why he used the wink emote. :)
I was just glad I didn't get any of those "humorous" assignments.  Was it some sort of conspiracy among you guys? :P
Oh, and for those wondering how I randomize the assignments...
I numbered the DC characters in the order they were named.
I then used an utility I found here:
http://www.randomizer.org/form.htm
Tell it to give me one set of numbers, 1-13 (the number of nominees), and to leave each number in the set unique.
It then jumbles the order and then I assign them to the challengers in the order they posted.
Sure beats drawing them from a hat. :)

Remember the next time we do Amalgams you will keep the DC character you name, so don't nominate someone that you will have trouble with!
I for example, nominated Black Cat because I wanted to draw a female character, and that was a surefire way to get the option.  I was hoping for Zatanna (Black Magic) or Robin (Blackbird), but I can make "Black Bat" work...
Title: Re: Artistic Challenge 14 (Amalgam) Assignments Posted!
Post by: UnfluffyBunny on March 01, 2007, 03:45:37 PM
heh heh, it wasnt intended as a slight or anything, just ironic luck :P
(i'd always presumed you had some kind of outside source for randomising, I fgured it might be using another human but I guess that form would work too :P )
Title: Re: Artistic Challenge 14 (Amalgam) Assignments Posted!
Post by: Pyroclasm on March 01, 2007, 03:49:34 PM
I used to have my wife pull them out of a bag with a bunch of little papers with the stuff written on it.  I don't know why it took me so long to do a search for a randomizer. :D

Heres a preliminary sketch for you all to enjoy:

:P

Are we allowed to collaborate on this, or does it have to be singularly our work. If so, my real thing might look a bit better with someone other than me colouring it. If not, thats fine, I can do it myself.
Title: Re: Artistic Challenge 14 (Amalgam) Assignments Posted!
Post by: Pyroclasm on March 03, 2007, 08:45:35 AM
Yes, you can collaborate.

The rule about the art having to be your own is in reference to people recycling someone else's work in whole or in part. (Especially without express permission of the original artist.)  This does not mean you cannot use another artist's work as reference.

BTW, quite funny.

Cool. In this case, I have a black and white image all prepared and ready for colouring. I have to say, it looks pretty funky. If anyone wants both a preview and to lend a hand at giving this the final touch of colour, I'd be very happy. Send a shout if you can.

I was gonna say something along the same lines, Reep. I've finished the black and white, now I need to colour the damn thing... or find someone willing to colour it for me, since there's something I need to represent that I can't do with pencils/inks... hee

Ladies and gentlement, I give you... USSRgent!
I basically took elements of USAgent's costume from the Force Works era (I enjoyed that comic, so sue me) and mixed it with some Red Star elements - apparently both characters have worn pirate boots. Go figure.
Since Red Star's all about fire, I wanted to try and do a fire shield on the left hand (in the Force Works era, USAgent's armbands generated an energy shield), but I wanted to do it digitally, so there's nothing there until this gets coloured. (*shrugs*)
The traditionally bad pun is in the name - USSRgent instead of USAgent, and I'd have silver (argent!) as a predominant colour.

G'day, if you have photoshop/paintshop send a PM. I've figured out my own fire effect that seems to work quite effectively that I'm sure you can use. Its pretty nifty so far, I must say!!

Since G'days gone ahead and done it, I might as well post my WIP. I figured the only possible way I could merge the two characters would be to give you something resembling a Legend of Zelda boss (What with the Norse/Asguardian theme and the use of a catterpillar) so I kept to that as my guideline. I even thought out on how Link would go about defeating it, but lets leave that for another time.

And now for the most original name you will ever hear... THORMIND

What? Don't look at me like that!

Okay..I got Iron Man and Superman.

Anthony Kent was a brilliant inventor and electronics expert.  He was driving through the sleepy town of Smallville, Kansas when he was almost run off the road by a caravan of large trucks.  Anthony got out of his car and tried to get some license plate numbers.  When, suddenly, he saw a flash of light and something struck the ground near him.  He awoke to find himself in intense pain and surrounded by men in strange uniforms.  He had been captured by the terrorist group known as The Hive of the Hydra, the drivers of the trucks.  He was told that he was recovered with the remains of what was believed to be an extraterrestrial craft.  They knew of Kent's work and threatened to kill him if he didn't salvage usable technology from the small craft.  They told him that his heart was severely damaged in the crash of the ship.  Anthony began to examine the capsule and happened upon a release switch.  Inside the craft he found what appeared to be a teen-age humanoid.  The poor boy was dead.  The corpse was clutching a small shield-shaped device.  When Anthony touched the device, his mind was flooded with images of the planet Krypton, long dead, that sent their only survivor into space.  Anthony's mind was flooded with languages, images, and schematics for various devices.  He began working feverishly on a design that had been implanted in his memory.  Anthony began cannibalizing the ship and created a suit of armor.  The small shield-shaped device was actually a power source.  He also found out that it was bio-mechanical.  He donned the suit and attached the device to his chest..very close to his heart.  There was a small moment of pain as Kent collapsed.  He awoke only a few moments later to find the armor missing?!  However, the small device was grafted to his chest, and it was keeping his heart functioning.  He touched it, and his armor began to form around his body.  When the transformation was complete, the power source glowed with the Kryptonian symbol for Power.  Kent broke out of the facility and embarked on a career as a superhero.  He was now the living legacy of planet Krypton.  Superion lived.

Here's the black and white pic...I'm horrible with colors, so I didn't even try to color it.  If anyone wants to, please feel free to give it a color scheme.   :)

Technically you can still join this one.  You just have to declare the Marvel character you'll use, and I'll give you a DC character from a pool.  You can join this one anytime up until April 1st.  Otherwise, the next challenge (an Avatar Randomizer) which begins on the 1st, is already taking signups in this thread: http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=41802.0 (http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=41802.0)

Bearded--
Here's how I got a random DC character for you:
I asked my wife to name a DC character off the top of her head.  (I didn't tell her what it was for.)
Her choice was Lex Luthor.

So, good luck with your Spider-Man/Lex Luthor amalgam.

Here's my long-overdue entry:

Death-Storm

Ororo Munroe nearly dies in a terrorist attack that leaves her orphaned.  When she awakens from her coma, she finds that she has inherited the powers of the goddess Rama Kushna, to control the weather as well as the minds of the living.  She uses her powers to fight for the poor people of her African homeland, righting the wrongs committed against them by tyrannical and warlike governments.

I lost track of this thread - but the "late" entries are great stuff.  Pyro - I particularly dig the bat cut-out on the Black Bat's costume!

yes that costume is awesome, sexy, fierce.. what else can i say about it.  Combining Batman elements with X-men mutant powers and Spidey's Black Cat... I want to read that whole comic!!

I bet all of us would love to see it!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.  As for me doing a full comic featuring Black Bat, it is highly unlikely.  Besides not being a writer, it took me 2 months just to finish the cover mockup.  I don't think I want to spend the next 5 years trying to put together one issue.

However, I do like the character and may draw her again in the future.  Perhaps fighting another Amalgam by The Hitman: Dr. Sourpuss.

I apologize for not getting my entry done. For those who don't know my scanner died on me some time ago and I haven't been able to pick up a replacement.

I did manage to find a way to get a sketch of my entry scanned in after all this time.

My assignment was Colonel Amercia (Marvel Zombies) + The Joker.

I sketched what the normal version of Captain Anarchy (my amalgam) and planned on drawing the zombie Colonel Anarchy after. Never made it to the second stage.

Anyway here is a very sloppy pen sketch colored as quick as I could manage. Looks like dookie but eh.

BTW I changed his boots in my second sketch. They are just military boots now not buccaneer boots.

Glad to see your entry!
You should still join the challenges and just post the images later.  Later is always better than never, and your entries are ALWAYS welcome!
Great job!
