"failure to load character def..."

I'm getting the errormessage "Warning: Failure to load character def". whenever I try and start FF1. It may be that the message is truncated, since I can find no "character def" file in the FF1 folder. I was trying to install VPMAX, and when I went to open the game and try the voices, I got that message. I replaced the VPMAX character and object dat files with the previous ones,  and I still had the message, I tried a "repair" installation, and then uninstalled and re-installed, and I still get this. I read Yellow Lantern's thread about FFv3R and it has given me a few ideas about some things to try.

Any other suggestions?
