Hi, my name is Mal and Im 3d sculpt/model artist (I'll link some of my work somehow but I'm new so bear with me please). I recently found these games and have fallen in love with them and the modding community here would love to start to at least try to make some mods of my own. I don't know much in the way of programming/scripting but I have done a small bit of programming before. My "expertise" is more focused on 3D modeling and texturing, hell even rigging to a degree haha. I don't know how active this community here is when it comes to helping newcomers but if there is anyone out there willing to help me learn this it would be very much appreciated. I'd like to make story mods based on either OCs or Marvel/DC characters I love as well as maybe some mods based on the MCU films/shows. I like the idea of the PatCity mod, open worldish, free roam, and fighting crim and I also saw a mod request posted here for something like that but for Batman TAS, I think that's a great idea too. I'm pretty interested in learning to script for this game so I can start creating mods like these even if they start off small in scale. In any case, thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post, I appreciate it!

Here is some of my 3d work for those interested:

Beautiful jobs! Surely you will have excellent responses as soon as they read your message.
In my case, I discovered the game almost 10 years ago and the community much less. The quality of the people is excellent and they will surely explain and help you. There are very good tutorials already going around that serve as a guide for someone who "somewhat knows" about programming.

For my part, I am a screenwriter and I always loved the world of classic Marvel and DC comics, as well as some lesser known ones.
I don't know much about any of the necessary things but with what it is to do projectile fx I have learned a lot to modify the originals of the game.
Well I hope you find it a great entertainment and have a good reception.

I teach screenplay classes online but basically I do it in Spanish, I wouldn't mind giving a class for the forum, in fact I was thinking about that, but the number of people who understand Spanish is not very existent either, since most of them are people from speak in english. Finally pending project.

Hey. I'm currently trying to get 3ds Max 4.2 running on my system, win10. virtualbox used to work, but not anymore. I might be setting up a machine to run on winxp, because otherwise there are problems with ffedit leveledit and character tool. I'll update you on my progress.
The models for ff are very low poly, by the way.

Thank you! And I sure hope I get some responses, I'd really like to try making something cool for the game even if its just character models and stuff.

Yeah I know models for the game are very lowpoly lmao that's not an issue, everything shown here is just to illustrate that I am no stranger to 3D. As far as 3ds max, why that program specifically? I can use 3ds max myself but I'm a lot better with blender. Is there any reason in particular you're going to use 3ds max? Also do you have any prior knowledge in 3d because if not, I can tell you now 3ds max is no walk in the park when it comes to user friendly design lmao. While the program doesn't expect new users to know it specifically it does expect you to know how to do whatever it is you're trying to do in other programs because that makes it easier when looking for them in 3ds max.

Hi again Mal!

OK I am happy to help start you off on your modding journey.

I did a tiny bit of modding with FF1 20 years ago but stopped for a long time as my computer back then broke and I bought a new one that annoyingly couldnt run the game. I recently realised that both FF games are now on GOG and work perfectly on Windows 10 so was able to get back to it recently.

The first thing I would suggest is to mod from Freedom Force Vs the 3rd Reich as I have tried with both and can definitely say the 2nd game is easier to mod with as it needs much less python scripting.

The 1st step is to download ALEX'S FFv3R MOD TOOLS from https://www.alexff.com/goodies.php. Install that into your game directory. That will include ffedit and character tool2.

Next download EZFX also from the same site and EZhero and install them too.

After this download and install FFX 3.3 from http://ffx.freedomforceforever.com/downloads.htm.

You can get other resources such as skins and meshes and .hero files from many of the sites listed on this forum in http://www.freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=58687.0

I would also download a couple of other mods just to get to know them and familiarise yourself with the way they are scripted. One I highly recommend is Marvel Adventures which you can find at https://www.moddb.com/mods/marvel-adventures.

To start making your own mod after this open ffedit and go to help. It gives you a great step by step introduction to modding the game.

The main difference I have found between modding FF1 and FFVT3R is that FF1 uses more difficult python scripting. FFVT3R uses EZscript which is 100x easier to use. To get an overview of that side of modding I recommend watching the 3 tutorials made by BentonGrey at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjRAL8-MhAY&t=6s&ab_channel=BentonGrey

Anyway I hope that gets you started. If you have any questions or need anything clarifying myself or Im sure other members of the community will only be too happy to help.

Also to make your own meshes is not the part I am most familiar with but there are certainly tutorials regarding using 3D Max and blender which I believe are the most frequently used programs for that. Photoshop can be used for skinning.

I look forward to seeing more of your amazing work!

I am familiar with 3ds max and it has the export plugins. I'd consider blender, but I want to work on head files, and max is the best way.

Welcome Mal!

In the early days, 3DSMax was used mostly due to the release by Irrational of the exporters for the .nif format. Also it was the only way to make keyframes. (With character studio)

Others have been working with keyframes for a while, but making new ones seems to require character studio.  The drawback is that older versions of 3DSMax don't play well with modern systems.

I congratulate you on joining our community, and though my ability to create things for the game consists primarily of providing content made by others, I hope you are successful in this endeavor.

detourne_me

Welcome Mal,
If you are having troubles getting 3DSmax to work, there is also the Blender route for creating meshes in Freedom Force.
Check out Ewzzy's tutorial here: http://www.freedomforce.ewzzy.com/Blender.php

Howdy Mal, and welcome to the community!  As the others have already said, there are a lot of great resources to help someone get started.  In addition, I'm still an active modder, and I am usually around the forums and can help folks who are trying to learn the craft.

As far as you wanting to get started, you're welcome to check out my Marvel Adventures mod and my DC Universe according to Grey (DCUG) mod once it's rereleased, as both of those are designed to serve as spring boards to allow folks to create their own stories in an already established setting.

I got max 4.2 running in virtualbox with win2000, so, it's possible. I'm still trying to find a win10 solution to the leveledit problem.

BentonGrey

Leveledit problem?  You mean the map editor launched from FFEdit?  It works fine for me in compatibility mode.
