Constantine Reboot

Looks like Bad Robot is going to be rebooting everyone's favorite (well maybe not Swamp Thing's) magician on HBO Max. Man, Gremlins, JL-Synder, and now this, H-Max is definitely trying to make me want to subscribe. And it looks like Matt Ryan is still going to be playing John.

Justice League Dark series. They got mah curiosity.

One thing though. The newest news is they're looking for a new actor to play Constantine, in particular one who is a person of color.

On the one hand, if it's not Matt Ryan, I suppose it's fine. Whoever it is will have to make the role his own. On the other, one of the reasons I was so positive to David Ajala's excellent turn as Manchester Black on Supergirl is because if he was a white British guy, he'd probably come off as a Constantine knock-off, and beyond that, Ajala's voice and attitude just fit perfectly. He was also on S3 of Star Trek Discovery doing the same voice and accent. Hell, you have him play Constantine in this show and as far as I'm concerned, that'd be perfect.

QuoteJL-Synder, and now this, H-Max is definitely trying to make me want to subscribe.

So you do want to watch the Snyder Cut, eh?

So...why is it even called Constantine?

Well that took some of the fuel out of my fire. I was mainly jacked up to see Ryan keeping the role. But, I'm willing to give them a chance.

My total disdain for Synder is well known. I actually loved Watchmen, his 'destruction porn' style of superheroes works fine there. But he tried taking that, and mixing in some Nolan-esc grimness and smearing that fecal matter into the face of Superman. But the mish-mash of JL wasn't totally (Gah this chaffs my tail saying this) Synder's fault. The trailers for it look good enough to peak my interest. On the other hand, I still remember that the trailers for 'Man of Steel' and 'BvS' also looked really good too. I feel like Cody getting brain freeze and going back for more.(BTW you can stop after that scene, that was the only clip I could find)

But like I said above I'm willing to give it a chance. I want to see the League do good, I honestly root for any and every comics based movie to do good. When they do good, the studios get bolder, and are willing to try other properties. Think about this, an 'Aquaman' movie was something of an inside joke on 'Entourage'. In 'Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back', the 'Daredevil' scene was mostly an in-joke Kevin Smith put in because he was a writer on the comic. Now they have been made into movies.

Marvel has already got a good track record and look at some of movies and shows to come out of their success. Doctor Strange wasn't that well know outside of fandom, now he has a second film. WandaVision? Could anyone have predicted that being a thing a few years ago? Marvel did good, so they're taking chances, and we, the fans, are reaping the rewards. (Of course, so are the studios  )

So the better DC movies do, the more DC might be willingly to take a chance on. I'm not saying root for something that is the suckiest suck to suck a suck. (To paraphrase the great sage Homer.... Simpson.)Look at 'Aquaman', 'Wonder Woman', and 'Shazam', the three after-League movies. (Haven't see WW84, can't judge.) What was different from them compared to JL? Right off the bat, they weren't so angsty that even the CW was like 'Bro, Chill!'. They had fun with the material, they were brighter (and OMG Aquaman was gorgeous in 3D), and it wasn't 'destruction porn'. (And the hero didn't compromise their core beliefs! Batman DOESN'T use a gun! Superman DOESN'T kill! No neck snaps, no shooting flunkies in nightmare premonitions! GAH!)

So, yeah, I'm willing to give JL-Synder a chance.

Legends, against all conceivable odds, is still not cancelled, so Matt's still playing the character, just not in his own show. And while Legends has turned into a (mostly) gloriously insane farce, Constantine's still fantastic in it.

Constantine *coughing his lungs out*: "Well, there's no point in quitting now" *attempts to light a cigarette before everyone stops him.*

As for the Snyder Cut: Sounds about right.

On the other hand, many (myself included) saw Doomsday and Lex being a hot mess in BVS well in advance.

QuoteIn 'Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back', the 'Daredevil' scene was mostly an in-joke Kevin Smith put in because he was a writer on the comic.

Weird, I barely remember that, and I've seen that movie a bunch of times.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot wasn't "good", but if nothing else, I gotta give Smith all the love in the world for "Affleck you were the BOMB as Batman" and "Hey, those Marvel movies are a triumph of cinema. I love those movies. I live for those movies [...]"

And Supergirl and Val Kilmer as Jay and Silent Bob's superhero personas was....certainly interesting.

Smith and his buddy on his podcast said it perfectly in 2017 when the JL cut came first came out "They need a Kevin Feige." Pretty much. Kevin pointed out that the CW was doing the Earth X crossover at the time, and Infinity War was about to come out "And we might be losing some folks." The difference is, if/when Snyder were to do that in his movies, I can't imagine anyone would actually care. Noone seemed to care in the slightest when Superman died, and that's kinda weird, at least out of context.

QuoteBut like I said above I'm willing to give it a chance. I want to see the League do good, I honestly root for any and every comics based movie to do good.

As I've said before, I watch basically everything (well, not quite. I didn't watch Catwoman and Jonah Hex, and I'm not planning to). And I'll usually be fair and say what I thought worked and what I thought didn't. I cannot imagine the Snyder Cut being as dreadful as Birds of Prey, I mean I hope it isn't. And fair is fair, the acting in BoP was actually really good. It's just the writing on it was....yuck.

The Canadian not-30-bucks rental version of 1984 comes out just a hair after the Snyder Cut, which I'm...eh about. I was kinda hoping it was the other way around. So I'll watch it soon. But I'm prepared. Everything I've seen and heard (and I've heard A LOT) says it's either kinda bad, mostly bad or REALLY bad.

But I've been thinking for a while, the reason why WW the character/movie (first movie) came out as good-ish as it did, is because, and this is one of the weirdest things about the DCEU - like half the cast of heroes and villains are like Elseworlds versions of themselves in the mainstream movie universe. Batman's a fatalistic psychotic vigilante out for revenge killing people, Superman's miserable and unable to connect with humanity, Pa Kent tells Clark not to help people, even if it means they die. Lex is an awkward 20-something tech sector weirdo who can't give a speech at his own gala without stuttering, Huntress is boiled down to "has rage issues", Joker is a blinged out mobster who acts like he does way too much drugs, Deadshot is Will Smith, Jimmy Olsen is a CIA agent who is immediately shot in the head. KGBeast is some random mercenary who works for Luthor, Aquaman is, well you know, Cassandra Cain is a vulgar pickpocket, Black Mask is a raving woman-hating creep. Steppenwolf is....whatever in the heck Steppenwolf is supposed to be. Ditto Enchantress.

And Martian Manhunter is

Spoiler
General Swanwick, who, for some reason, in BvS, told Lois not to "invent a conspiracy to give Superman back his halo." And yes, I just looked this up on wiki, and both Snyder AND Harry Lennix confirmed this was not planned in advance.

I've probably missed some.

And then WW is pretty much just WW. And I have to assume the reason why is "Hey, this character doesn't already have like 5 movies and 4 or 5 animated adaptations and multiple video games so let's not screw up this time so we don't have to mulligan like 10 years later."

Even the stuff in 1984 that really went off the rails (which from the sounds of it, almost the entire movie qualifies as that) is just the result of a really sloppy script that desperately needed a few more drafts. Or, if you believe the insider baseball, the result of a crap ton of rewrites and changes before the film finally came out.
