Title: Sentinels of the Multiverse Play by post edition
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on April 06, 2014, 06:22:28 PM
I saw this done at another forum, and it works quite well, so I wanted to see if anyone wants to try it here.  Sentinels of the Multiverse is a superhero based card game that is fun and simple enough to play.  Because of the fact that it's coop and the way it works, it's easy enough for me to handle all the decks and allow you all to give the game a spin.  You don't need to own the game or have played it at all before.

So is anyone interested?  I need between 3-5 players.

I like this game, but wouldn't it be hard to play by post?

Nope, it's done all the time.  I'll run all the decks and just post a card list.  For those who don't have the game, that will include card text and all rule information.

This sounds like good fun, but I have a habit of not being around for weeks at a time. Will enjoy watching the results, though!

Yeah. but one person in a month is not enough.  If other people wish to volunteer, though we can still do this.

I will emphasize that you don't need to have the game or even know how to play it.

I'm willing to try and play the game if this pushes through. :)

If necessary, I can play a hero myself, which would give us 3, the bare minimum.  I'll leave this open for up to three more for a little while though.

I'd be interested but I'm a bit like Reep, only around about once a week...so I'm probably out.

I would be interested in a once a week game, if that would work. I mean, why not?

It would take a long time to play, but I'd be willing to do it if all are agreed.  I'd still prefer to get a couple more people if possible.

So far now the interested parties are: Bearded, Deaths Jester, Outcast.  Not sure whether Xenolith counts are interested or not.  That leaves 2 slots open, 1 if Xenolith is in.

Heard of this game when I started trying to design my own CCG.
Curious about it, so I'll give it a shot.

Alright, lets go to claiming heroes.  I'll use just ones from the base game for now and leave out the more complex ones, but if you're familiar with the game, feel free to pick one I haven't put up here.  I own all of them.  Feel free to speak up even if you haven't declared your intention to play.  Now's your chance.

A soldier with a suit of military designed power armor, Bunker is a bit like Iron Man, only he can't fly and has a lot more guns.

Mistreated for the pair of wings she is gifted with, Fanatic has chosen to side with the angels--literally--in the fight against evil.  Holy warrior type powered by holy relics.

A gentile soul gifted with super strength, ancient warrior traditions, and immortality.  He's like the Hulk if the Hulk looked more like a normal person, was highly educated, and was an elementary school teacher for his day job.  Okay, he's nothing like Hulk, but he does like to smash.

From a long line of Legacies starting with the Revolutionary War, each generation of Persons have developed a new power and passing it and all previous ones on to the next.  The current Legacy possesses flight, super strength, durability, and danger sense.  His daughter has laser vision.  Yeah, he's like a hybrid of Captain America and Superman, but plays most like the former, inspiring his team mates to greatness.

Finding the staff of the Egyptian sun god Ra, a humble archeaologist uses it to transform into Ra, god of the sun!  Yeah, he's Thor with fire powers, basically.

A scientist with the power of super speed.  Not much else to say.  Plays a lot of cards and builds up momentum for spectacular stuff later on.

Former alien slave who escaped from the warlord Voss only to end up in the hands of suspicious humans.  He has powers over the weather and is also aquatic.  He even sometimes talks to the fishes.

Billionaire heiress by day, stalker of criminals by night.  Female Batman, essentially.

Alright, claim your heroes.

So Ra, Haka, and Tachyon are now taken.  That leaves the following up for grabs.  I can only take two more, but if we end up with less than five players, I'll jump in and take a more complicated hero that I didn't list here.  It's a coop game, so that would be fine if I did.

Yup, I have a convenient google doc spoiling all the cards, so I can copy paste whatever gets drawn.  Easy enough.  Also it's a coop game and there no rule against showing your hand to other players, so unless someone objects I'll just post everyone's cards using spoiler tags.

A bus full of kindergarteners on their way home from school has gone missing from Rook City.  After a full day of no news, message arrive by email at the Freedom Tower, challenging the Freedom Five to rescue the children from the wilds of Insula Primalis before they become dinosaur chow.  Legacy, leader of the Freedom five, leaves at once with other two available member, scientist speedster Tachyon and Rook City's famous masked detective, The Wraith.  Haka, substitute kindergarten teacher and friend of children everywhere insists of coming along to give the villain a good pounding and at Legacies request, the god of the Sun, Ra himself, joins them.

When they arrive at the coordinates indicated they find--nothing.  Nothing that is, that they can see.  Abuscade, expert hunter, has finally gotten the chance he has been looking for, the chance to hunt the ultimate prey--heroes.  Among them, the greatest prize of all, the immortal warrior Haka!

Summary, start of game.

Notes: Villain cards have two sides with different rules.  What they are and what causes them to flip over vary from villain to villain.  In Ambuscade's case, he attacks the hero target with the most hp on this side and on the other side is invulnerable and attacks the lowest instead.  His cloaking device being in play is what causes him to flip sides.

Ambuscade and Haka are nemeses, meaning they do an extra point of damage whenever they attack each other.

To setup the game, we put the top 4 devices into play.  They are:
Automated Turret, 8hp: At the end of the Villain turn, this card deals the Hero Target with the Highest HP 2 Projectile Damage.
Personal Cloaking Device, 9hp: When this card enters play, flip Ambuscade's Villain Character cards.
Sonic Mine, 1hp: "When this card is destroyed, this card deals each Hero Target 2 Sonic Damage.
Targets dealt Damage this way cannot deal Damage until the start of the next Villain turn."
A second Sonic Mine.

Ambuscade immediatelly flips and will now attack the lowest and is invulnerable to damage until the cloaking device is destroyed.

Ambuscade's turn

Start: Cloaking device still in play, does nothing
Play: Custom Hand-Cannon,   5hp: Device--At the end of the Villain turn, Ambuscade deals the Hero with the most cards in play 2 Projectile Damage.
End: Ambuscade deal Wraith 4 damage. Wraith is now at 22 hp.
Automated Turret deals Haka 2 damage.  Haka is now at 32 hp.
Ambuscade deals any one hero 2 hp damage.  I'll need a volunteer for this one. I would recommend either Haka or Legacy as both can tank pretty well.

One we sort out who take the damage from the hand cannon, we'll move on.

Since he's your nemesis, he deals an additional point of damage, for a total of 3.  Haka is now at 29 hp.

It is now Haka's turn.

Power: Destroy all cards beneath this card. Haka deals 1 Target X Toxic Damage, where X = the number of cards destroyed this way times 2."

You may do the following in this order:
Play one Card
Use one Power
Draw one card

Or you may pass your turn to draw 2 cards.

Spoilers for all cards may be found here, in case you are curious.

Ok. I'll play the card "Haka of Restoration". (edited to add: I'll discard a Savage Mana card.)

Then use my base power "Crush" to attack the cloaking device if i can. If not, I'll attack the turret instead.

After that, i'll draw a card. :)

Haka of Shielding: One-Shot--Draw 2 cards, then discard 1 or more cards. Reduce the next Damage dealt to Haka by 2 for each card discarded this way.
Vitality Surge: One-Shot--Haka regains 2 HP. Draw a card.
Do you wish to discard either of these cards as well?

And yes, the cloaking device is a perfectly valid target.  It takes 2 points of damage from Haka and is now at 7 hp.

Since there's nothing here that could effect anyone else, it is now Tachyon's turn.

A bit of an explanation here, the more Burst cards in her trash, the more powerful certain cards become.  That's all you need to know, really.

Does that do damage to all enemies automatically? (or do I need to specify?)

Since it does not use the word "may" the damage is non optional and hits everything that isn't a hero target.
Tachyon tried to deal 1 damage to Ambuscade, but he is immune to damage.

Legacy will use Bolster Allies, followed by his base power, then draw a card.

When this card is destroyed, return cards beneath this card to the players' hands.

Since this card does not act until the beginning of the Environment turn, nothing further happens.  And that is the end of Round 1.  Round 2 start of round summary and Villain turn coming up.

"I am the greatest hunter who ever lived.  You will never survive, heroes" Ambuscade gloats, before touching a button on his wrist and turning dissappearing right before them.  And invisible charge of energy burns wraith and gunfire from an automated turret hidden in the jungle and a gun fired from an invisible hand both hit Haka.  Haka grunts, barely seeming to notice, before beginning to chant an ancient haka from his people.  His wounds immediately begin to close up.

His gunfire briefly giving him away, Tachyon speeds into action, dinging his stealth field long enough to briefly turn him visible.  Seizing the moment, Haka throws a rock at him, while Ra summons a stream of fire.  The stealth field is flickering now, the device on Ambuscade's wrist beginning to smoke.

In the meantime, Tachyon has also knocked over the turret, found two sonic mines hidden in the brushes and safely deposited them half a mile away before they explode, and written some notes on sonic technology before rejoining the others on the battlefield.  This takes about half a second.

As she returns Ra's eyes glow.  The hands, feet, and weapons of all the heroes catch fire.  Haka grins. Tachyon writes a note describing the experience.  Wraith does not react at all, busy configuring some new equipment, now on fire, for the battle, and Legacy takes charge, regrouping the heroes for the next round.

Ambuscade is immune to damage.  The only other viable target is the Pterodactyl.

Ra deals 5 damage to the turret, destroying it.  Ra deals 3 and 4 damage to the hand cannon, destroying it.  If you wish, you can target the Pterodactyl which would deal it 3 damage and bring it down to 2.  Up to you though.

In any case you draw

Pterodactyl is good. I thought the cloaking device was what was making Ambuscade immune, and I thought the device was gone. That staff sounds great.

End: No equipment cards are in play, so no one can destroy any.  Every Hero takes 5 points of damage.   I'm about to do the status update for the next round, so I'll list hp totals there.

This concludes Round 2.

Amuscade, struggling to keep his stealth field up, throws a charged bullet casing at where he thinks Wraith is, but she's blended into the shadows and only receives the edge of the blast.
His position momentarily revealed, Haka and Tachyon, following Legacies instructions,  charge at Ambuscade, pounding his his failing shield.  As Tacyon blazes away into the distance, turning around for the next base, Ra, throws a blazing fireball that engulfs Ambuscade and everything around him.  The turrets pops, as acrid smells filling the air, and stops firing.  The stealth shield fails and Ambuscade drops his now hot gun as he runs into the jungle to escape the inferno.  Wraith, meanwhile, shoots a grappling hook at the dinosaur flying overhead, throwing a handful of something into his face then dropping to the ground and vanishing into the jungle.  The pterodactle shrieks in annoyance and flies away.  Meanwhile the pursuit of Ambuscade is halted when the team come to a blazing river of lava.

I assume you wish to play your staff with your additional play after you draw it?  You can just keep in your hand and play a different card if you wish.

In the mean time Summon Staff, in addition to drawing the Staff of Ra, also draws

Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Play by post edition
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on June 03, 2014, 09:11:12 PM
Okay, let me break this down for you.

Ambuscade is the only target left.

Summon staff only puts the Staff in your hand, it doesn't play it.

You get an additional card draw, which I gave you.  You get an additional card play, which you can use to play your shiny new staff.  I assume this is what you want to do, but don't wish to assume.

With the staff in play, you would now get +3 damage without having to use its power.  Using its power would do 1 more point of damage, but would destroy the staff.  This can be a valid strategy.

So do you wish to play the staff now and if you do, do you wish to use your base power or your staff power to attack Ambuscade?

I actually posted an end of round report, but several of my posts have gotten eaten by the forums recently, and I never noticed that it didn't make it online.  Also I dismantled my decks to take them to play with actual live people and haven't pulled them out of the box yet.  Anyhow, now I'm back and ready to go.

So, Haka, Tachyon, and Wraith take 6 damage each.  Legacy and Haka have 14 damage, while Tacyon has 16.

This concludes Round 3.  Again.  Please don't eat this post this time, forum.

Tachyon quickly scouts a way around the lava, although the heat scorches the heroes.  Having crossed one perilous lava flow they immediately run into another.  Sensing an opportunity, Ambuscade leaps out to attack.  This does not turn out to be his best move.  Ra raises his hand, and form out of the sky, the Staff of Ra flies into it.  He and the other heroes they strike in perfect unison, following Legacy's orders and Ambuscade is quickly forced to retreat again.

This begins Round 4.

Effects in play:
All Heroes are doing fire damage
All Hero damage is +2
Legacy's damage is +3 (although his power bonus wears off before he can attack, so it's effectively +2)
The first damage dealt to the Wraith is reduced by 2
Abuscade's damage is +1 and he deals damage whenever a Device is destroyed

I was really counting on someone like Tachyon to destroy the lava environment thus avoiding damage. Didn't thought it could play another one during it's turn and inflict damage that quickly. Anyway...

"It's no use Tachyon, you may be fast but these lava pools are too many even for you."

guess i'll have to bring out the heavy artillery.

"Mjolnir! ....ah i mean...Taiaha! come to my aid!"  ( Haka plays Taiaha, hoping to get to do some immediate double damage to Ambuscade besides using the base power Crush.) If my calculation is correct Taiaha will do 3 melee damage plus 2 fire damage and plus 1 nemesis damage. Then Crush will do 2 melee damage plus 2 fire and hoping for another plus 1 nemesis.

"Captain......Caaaaaaaaaave Maaaaaaan!"  Then i'll draw a card.

Oh, and wasn't Ambuscade's HP at 23 after the Wraith's smoke bomb attack?

Afraid it doesn't work that way.  Taiaha will deal 3 base damage to up to 2 different targets.  Also you can only use one power during your use a power phase, which means you can either use Crush or Taiaha.  Taiaha will deal 1 more damage than Crush, so playing it is still a good move.

Technically, it's 6 Fire damage, since Imbued Fire turns all damage done into fire, but you're correct in your math, 3 from base, 1 from Imbued, 1 from Galvanized, and 1 from Nemesis.

If I use Hypersonic Assault, would it prevent the River from doing damage to everyone for a turn?
(want to check I'm reading it right)

Or maybe my teammates would consider discarding 3 cards to kill the River?

The River of lava isn't a target and can't be damaged, so Hypersonic Assault won't do anything do it.  On the other hand, you are discarding the cards from the top of the your deck, not your hand, so it doesn't really cost anything to do so.  That's assuming the game even lasts that long, which according to my math it shouldn't, not unless 2 or three people miss out on damage they could do.

It doesn't have hp, so no.  It can only be destroyed by a card that specifically says it can, including by River of Lava itself.

I will play Flesh of the Sun God. Does " Hero character cards are immune to Fire Damage" mean the other Heroes also?
Then Base Power on Ambuscade and draw a card.

Just by being in play, Flesh of the Sun God makes you immune to fire damage. If you use its power, you extend the immunity to all the other heroes as well.

Unless you decide to change your mind, you bring Ambuscade down to 9 hp.  About 5 points of damage each from the other two heroes, and the heroes win.

Okay that surprised me.  Guess this is going to last one more round then.

River of Lava is destroyed and the next damage that would be done to Wraith is now reduced by 4 (since you haven't been hit since the last time you used it)

"Yield, Villain! Your fiendish plot to flood the city with rivers of lava is at an end!"

Legacy will proceed to do another Back-Fist Strike, with his other fist!

Then Galvanize and draw a card

(Would I be right in saying, had DJ used Throwing Knives or Inventory Barrage, he would have scored 3 damage thanks to buffs, and mine would hit for 6? If so, boo DJ, boo!)
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Play by post edition

Actually, he already had Razor Ordinance in play and could have used that for 5 damage.  Or optimally, he could have used Impromptu Invention to pull out Utility Belt, put throwing knives into play with the second play from that, and used both Throwing Knives and Razor Odinance for a Total of 8 damage.  Of course, I've played this game a lot and know all the tricks, so I wouldn't expect a first time player to get all the combo plays like that.  No matter, it gives Haka a chance to take down his nemesis.

You hit Ambuscade for 6, leaving him at 3 hp.

Legacy draws

Spoiler
Take Down: Ongoing--Villain cards cannot be played. At the end of your turn, the Villain Target with the highest HP deals Legacy 2 Energy Damage. At the start of your turn, destroy this card.

It is now the Environment's turn

Cards in Play: None

The Environment plays Primordial Plant Life

Spoiler
Primordial Plant Life:When this card enters play, each Hero may destroy 1 of their Ongoing cards. Deal any Hero that destroys and Ongoing card 2 Toxic Damage. Deal any Hero that does not destroy an Ongoing card 4 Toxic Damage. At the end of the Environment turn, destroy this card.

So, destroy an Ongoing that you have in play and take 2 damage, or don't and take 4.  Tachyon and Wraith have no Ongoing cards in play, so they take the 4 damage.  Tachyon is now at 12hp.  Wraith's two turns of Stealth reduce the 4 damage to 0, so no actual damage is taken.

Haka, Ra, and Legacy need to decide whether or not to discard an Ongoing.

This concludes Round 4.  Round 5 will be starting shortly.

After shrugging off Ambuscades later attack, the team find that he has somehow crossed the rive.  Wraith pulls out another grappling hook and soon has a rope strung across both side and slides across.  Tachyon runs across the rope and Legacy flies besides it.  Haka looks at it sceptically but is talked into trying it, using the Taiaha, as pole like weapon that he had slung across his back, so slide across.  Ra, meanwhile, ignores the rope and just wades through the lava.  Unfortunately, what looks like grass turns out to be some kind of primordial plants which come to life and sting and scratch at the heroes.  As they struggle out of the field, Ambuscade strikes.  Sadly for him, he tries to sneak past Legacy, getting a back fist punch to the face for his trouble.  A combined assault from the other heroes chases him back into the jungle.

It is now Round 5

Effects in play:
All Heroes are doing fire damage
All Hero damage is +2
Legacy's damage is +3 (although his power bonus wears off before he can attack, so it's effectively +2)

Hmmm... It looks like Ambuscade was able to recover 7 Hp. I thought he was gonna be easy pickings after that last attack from Legacy.

Let's see. If i play Haka of Battle, and then discard at least 4 or 5* cards, would it's bonus damage be applied to my attack this round? I think that would be enough to knock his 10 Hp out right? Base crush with Taiaha (3), bonus hero damage (2)*, and nemesis (1) would give him a 6 point total damage + 4 or 5* from Haka of Battle.

*And i thought there can be only 1 ongoing card in play, so i'm not sure if we can still enjoy Ra's bonus fire damage.

But if it's gonna be applied in the next round that will make Haka mad  and " Mr. Mcgee, you wouldn't like me when i'm angry." , then i will have to risk hurting some friends with Rampage (sorry friends ^_^, this would be my last resort though) , just to be able to deal Ambuscade 5 points more of damage and finish him once and for all.

I actually forgot to update his sheet again.  He is at 3 hp.

But your calculations are almost correct.  You'd do a total of 12 damage and it would indeed apply right away, so you're good either way.

If you're wondering how I got to that--3 from Taiaha, +1 Galvanize +1 Imbued Fire, +1 Nenemsis.  You have 5 cards in your hand, plus Haka of Battle let you draw 2, so you can discard up to 6.  Total damage 12.

I see. Ok. It seems a waste to use Haka of Battle then, if he is that weak already.  :)

I'll just play Enduring Intercession, (not that it matters i guess). Then use crush with Taiaha to give 'ol Ambuscade a sweet tap on the head and end his suffering. Then draw a card? That is if we will still be using the same hand for our next adventure?

Then agree to Legacy's great finishing one liner earlier......"Yeah, just what Legacy said."  <tap> :D

Ambuscade leads the heroes right into a trap.  Wraith steps on a coin, primed to explode form lots of excessive energy, which blows up, knocking her off her feet.  Ambuscade appears running like a madman, shooting right and left.  The heroes of taken by surprise, and the villain begins to laugh from glee as their careful formation breaks apart.

Then he runs smack into Haka.  There is a brief pause as the towered Maori looks down at the much smaller Frenchman.  Haka reaches down and knocks Ambuscade out with a single blow from his meaty fist.

A few hours later, the team is back in Rook City.  While Legacy, Tachyon, and Ra lead Ambuscade to the nearest superhuman prison, Wraith and Haka rush to the location he gave them.  There, burried outside the city, they find the schoolbus.  The children are frightened, but otherwise fine, and Haka lifts the bus out easily.

Heroes Win!

The next game would be a start over.  Give me a couple of days and I'll start one up.  I'll offer a small selection of Villain and Environments this time, as well as double the number of available heroes.

Good job everyone.
