I know there is another expansion coming out soon that I plan to buy, but beyond Cryptic's regular pay-for-play expansion system, there isn't a whole lot to do once you reach level 40. The crafting system is not worth the trouble, and honestly, you can't make anything that is better than drops you get in NemCon. Once you have a full set of purple items there aren't many villains that can stop your hero unless you try to solo the legends and cosmic villains. I don't like to hunt for perks and costume drops, so really, what is there to do beyond starting a new character?
Vibora Bay becme boring rather quickly for me, largely because I felt like I was playing a fantsy RPG, and not a super-hero rpg.
Well, I'm hoping the new Viper missions are pretty good.

As for content beyond lvl 40, I agree that there is nothing much to be done after you purple out your char, but I like adding new nemesis for my 40s and farming the costume parts with them, while I lvl up the lower lvl alts.
I'm pretty sure the new expansion is a pay for play expansion. Unless they have recently changed their minds.
I pretty much still run Midnight Crusader for costume drops farming in VB, and Nemesis missions so I can earn tokens to buy AFs. I don't bother doing UNITY missions. I've actually yet to do a NemCon (because of bad timing; I'm never able to do it when there's one being planned on a certain channel.....) or a TT.
The requirements for crafted travel powers are insane, so I've given up on that pretty much. I currently need about 90 more Dragon Power Cores, and I've heard I'd need something like 1000 after I get done with the mission I have right now. That would require something like a month of doing nothing but farming and neglecting my alts, considering how little I see them drop.
Frankly, the game does have more endgame content than CoX, where I all I did when I hit max level there was run scanner missions or bank missions so I could gain influence/infamy to fund alts. Something I don't need to do in CO.
At least crafting was kind of fun in CoX. It's generally pointless in CO.
