That's a really cool character design, and a sweet skin to boot. Love 2.0, although I'd recommend trying to get the buttons to look more like diamonds.

But that would so go into being a sterotypical villianous card throwing thing...I mean, I don't want ot pigeon-hole Wild Card to much.  :P

In newer news: Excellent to hear you're getting back into skinning! Can't wait to see more of your stuff! :)

Becuase Murs is too lazy to post the finished piece on his colletion before releasing it.  Here's what the finished Ultimate Red Tornado looks like:

This says it extremely well.

Yeah, he looks like Red Tornado filtered through the Terminator folks.  That is a fantastic skin DJ!  The brightness of his symbols is really nice.  It breaks up the uniformity of his skin and stands out nicely.

I agree that the belt seems a little weird. Maybe if it was more plate-like, like the rest of him.
The rest is amazing stuff though. Heck, you could probably desaturate it and use it as an awesome generic robot base. I bet people would love that.

A skin of Mandrin's Death Squad I did for Benton's mod.

Can't say that i'm familiar with the character DJ. But I like it! I say....what rust are you talking about. The only rust i see is in that sword of his. Nice work! Speaking of rust, or something just related to it like metal. I think the metal parts of the armor might look even better with perhaps a shiny reflect file? But you know maybe it might not fit well, if you're going for an ancient armor kinda look. So..not sure.

I like the rope textures i see on his arm and leg bands and all the other small details you've put on his armor. Not to mention the skull face of course.

Anyways, it's great to see ya back with a new skin. I do hope to see some more.  :)

The character, or acutally group of characters, appeared in the original Iron Man # 99 and 100 (first edition run) so it's understandable that you might not know them so well.  As for the shiny refl, i avoided that becuase it looked a bit too gaudy when put on the metal section (metal is only acutally just the helmet and I think the torso, the comic doesn't exactly expound on it).

And yes, that's me rusty..I could've done a better job of this skin...really belive me...the face needs work.

Skin might be rusty, but I agree with the consensus- it looks decent to me. About the only issues I see are that it maybe looks a bit blurry in spots, but overall it's a decent skin for something you just did for Benton.

Yes i guess there will always be room for improvement as the saying goes.
Does that mean you will still be working on improving this skin, particulary the face area? If not, how about another skin to shake off that rust you're talking about. :)

Pretty good for an old rusty guy like me...oh and here's the sotry on Bull's Eye too.  That way you guys can understand him...maybe...or not!

Spoiler: ShowHide
HYDRA hired Bull's Eye to kill Nick Fury, but it was critical that this
occurred at a specific time, because they wanted to coincide Fury's death with HYDRA's
all-out assault on SHIELD. So Bull's Eye tailed Fury all day until they were ready. As
soon as he was given the order, he pulled out his special rifle and shot Fury in the back
of the head, killing him while he was at a concert with Laura Brown.

Then the HYDRA leader changed his mind, and decided not to attack SHIELD at that time,
because that was just what they would expect. HYDRA left Bull's Eye high and dry as
SHIELD agents began to swarm the area. Bull's Eye fired at the SHIELD agents who were
chasing him and succeeded in taking out quite a few, but then Dum Dum Dugan managed
to nail him. A bullet to the chest took him out for good.

Later it was revealed that the Nick Fury Bull's Eye killed was a LMD Fury and not the
real Fury.

Yeah, I doubted to many of you guys would've seen this character before, he lasted only one or two issues of the 1969 Nick Fury:Agent of SHIELD run.  I'm contemplating doing more obscure characters like this one, actually, just not sure if it's what I want to do or not.  But thanks everyone for the praise.

Hey, neat!  Yeah, I've never seen that version of the character before.  That's cool, DJ.  I agree with the others, you definitely captured the character quiet well, especially in the subtle differences in his color scheme.

Well, anything that gives us more DJ skins is a good thing, in my opinion.  Which obscure characters do you have in mind?

For my part, I like seeing these types of guys I've never heard of get created.  I'm always learning about the history of comics and ideas, and I enjoy that.

Actually, when I first saw the preview image, my first thoughts went to Nick Fury. Unfortunately, I don't have a great grasp of the characters/villains surrounding him, so I wouldn't have guessed Bullseye.

I'm working with Prev to have a place to host stuff and then I'll need to get a few more skins together so everything will be worth getting...probably be sometime in January but I'll make an announcement when all is ready!

For those that didn't know or those that hadn't noticed that Prem actually did something for once...you can get my stuff (or at least some of it) over at FRP (http://frp.unlimited2.net/).

Does this mean Prem and I have put our hatred for each other aside?  IS the world coming to an end?

Nope, I'm justing keeping a closer eye on Prem this way!  :P

What the finished skin that I did for Windblown's Chamber skope looks like:

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/deathsjester/chamber_zpsbc5b0fb7.jpg) (http://s111.photobucket.com/user/deathsjester/media/chamber_zpsbc5b0fb7.jpg.html)

Face and ear close up

Now understand folks, I haven't skinned in ages and am extremely rusty, so there are quite a few places that could really use some work...or at least I think so.  Once I work out where to release this at with Windblown I'll let you blokes know.

Will there be more skins from me? Who knows...

I'm not familiar with the character but he looks pretty cool.

It's nice to you skinning again DJ. Looking good so far.

The only thing i can see that seems a bit unfinished is the back side of the jacket maybe? The front side texture just looks more complete when compared to it.

And then, we for the start of the next future posting we have the flashy arsonist who was beaten by Dazzler, Flame:

joking aside, this is a pretty cool skin DJ

Yeah...I didn't want o skin his guy because of the yellow but he was the only one I had that I could hammer out quickly for the letter H.

And we continue....

This guy faced the Punisher and Spiderman but ultimately ended up with one of Frank's bullets lodged in his heart, it's Persuader:

Well, with Persuader out of the way and the next character, I've reached the next load of stuff to send to Prem (4 being the magic number), now if only he could catch up....

Anyways, this next bloke faced off against Rick Mason (aka The Agent) in South Africa and got his cyborg-y, gun-trigger happy (at least, that's what Nick Fury told Mason during briefing) butt handed to him.  Meet Quota:

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/deathsjester/quota_prof_zps57764e7f.jpg) (http://s111.photobucket.com/user/deathsjester/media/quota_prof_zps57764e7f.jpg.html)

Head in close

Now I know that the back of the head along with some of where the head wraps around is a bit off...I tried everything I can to fix it with no luck...I think it has to do with the mesh I'm using.

Very nice skin DJ. As to the head issue, a lot of meshes, because of their size (I think), have that issue with regular "Male_Basic" base skins.

Not sure exactly what a protopath's powers do, but from what I can tell it looks like he gained strength from those in his cult (ie the more in the cult, the more powerful he was) yet I'm not 100% sure. As for who he took on, all I know is he faced off against Spiderman and Valkyrie.

Yeah, those boots were a pain...kept having to check and recheck everything to make sure it lined up.  As for the step-by-step Tutorial on faces...hmmm...I don't know. I'm not really great at telling folks how to go about doing stuff, plus with the faces I use a lot of muscle charts and such to work it out...could be confusing to some folks....will think about it but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

I know....part of it is the fact I used Gni's male_pants base mesh which has wide cheekbones and a really narrow chin/jaw.  I wihs I could've found a mesh that fit better but I couldn't find one on my comp that fit.

This is Johnny Patches' Hammer and Anvil scope with DJ's skins. They aren't a perfect fit, but I don't think the minor problems would be visible in game.

Gawds those are old...look at how poor they look compared to what I do now....I think those are even on Gryphon's old base....*hides head* Can't let people see me like this....

I think she turned out pretty well. I have to agree with Benton, the Facework is fantastic, and really gives her a unique look. Definitely a solid showing here DJ, and I really like Skinning Style you used here. It has a softer, kind of retro look, sort of like something you would see in the late 70's, early 80's. Very nice DJ.

That's closer Glob...wish the eyes/mouth didn't morph so much, but I can work that.  Club still needs a bit more work..more crystalline looking...so more like...maybe one of Gren's Frost giant clubs perhaps?  Not sure....def more sides/edges...also..is it possible to hunch the shoulders/splay the legs a bit like it's shown in the pick?  Animus was never one to stand up straight...also LOINCLOTH/tattered toga thing.... ;D

Key frames are going to be a bit of a bear though...seeing as Animus uses the club as a focus for it's mental attacks.....

We're going to be stuck with whatever club we can find. This is from Male Titian. The eyes will be a little more to the form in the pics. I make some changes, look at it in Nifscope or CTool, and try to fix it. I wanted to try something like Male Muscular Tall, but can't find what i want.

Please note: if someone can do better PLEASE DO! I will not be offended; this is still a new skill for me.

If you want something like a male_muscular_tall, Glob, might I suggest looking at either Renegade's Black_Adam_REN or his Sentry_REN mesh? You'd have to peel of a few pieces but they might be closer to the body you want. Just an idea...

Glob,

Check out Grenadier's ICe Giant v2 and 3..the club on those looks very close to what we're shooting for.  Is here:  http://forceofparadox.byethost31.com/grenadier_one.html (http://forceofparadox.byethost31.com/grenadier_one.html) under the Asgardian villains section. Also might be able to use the loincloth off the Frost Giants there, though it would need resizing and the opening on the side doesn't work for the toga....might be easier to use Malekith's or Odin's skirt section with alpha enabled instead....I can work with that pretty easily and it would give us the closest look to the Animus when done. Will also be sending this to you via PM, just in case.

Face

I wanted to make the X a little bigger but I was running into some clipping trouble in the hair.  Also, you'll notice that the face is a bit bland straight on. Part of that is because Jesse Bedlam really does have a pretty bland face the few times he looks straight into the camera in the comics.  The artists actually tried to avoid straight on pics of Jesse ,in fact, unless they had extra shadows falling across the face.  Most often he's drawn looking up or down or a side shot of his face...so I spent more time on trying to get the side shots of his face to get close to what the comic had.  I think I did pretty good actually....matches up closely with the comic and has more personality.

Not Tyger Tyger, but this could work for her if I worked the face a bit (already got the basic structure skinned in last night). This one's name starts with a Y and is a Marvel character.

Amazing work with Feral and Bedlam.

I've almost got all the extras on her done which leaves her flesh and the psychic constructs minus the spider (the uv map on it is very confusing and I can't make heads or tails on some of it, so sticking with the original skin Windblown included). Pics to come in a few days.

Another WIP of Dani...not sure about the skin tone...might have to go back and do some colour tweaking and a few more layers of colour wash.

Still go the eyes and mouth to do..and then her psychic constructs and she'll be ready.

Face Up-close

As you can tell, I went back and ran another colour wash over the skin to get it closer to what I Dani's/Native American's skin tone is.  Still unsure about the face...something about it feels off to me but am unsure what yet.

As for these constructs I keep talking about, they are like this:

She has three attacks that bring up stuff like this: one a spider, one a shark, the last a zombie.  SO got zombo and sharko to finish and she'll be done.

Only thing I can think of on the face is maybe the nose to mouth ratio? Her nose seems a bit large, but I haven't seen drawings of her in quite some time.

Otherwise she looks good. And I may be wrong about the nose.

Zombie

Now, I've got to give WB credit on the zombie.  I had planned on doing something more than this with it but unhappily everything I tried came out looking wrong.  I instead ended up going back to the standard that WB sent with the skope, blurred it, painted gore and grunge on top of it, and added multiple layers of textures (nine or ten different textures, ranging from bark to scratched metal to grungy book covers) before finally running a pink colour layer over it. I wish I could've gotten the other idea I had working but alas no luck.

Edit: Still getting used to this new mouse of mine....would work wonderfully for me if my fingers weren't so long. I like that I can switch between dpi modes (low, medium, high, even higher, extreme type routine) and the extra buttons are wonderful but because of the length of my fingers (it's a claw grip mouse, which is how I grasp a mouse for those wondering), I have no room hold it with my pinkie finger.  Most mice I have that problem with but I don't use them a lot nor do I do fine detail graphics work with them so there's no trouble there.  This one...my pinkie is getting a work out being dragged around free....I probably just need to get used to it.  Okay..that's just me rambling..so meh.  Will say I love everything else about the new comp build...except win7....got to relearn my shortcuts....

Definitely a fantastic piece of Art DJ, but I get what you're saying about the eyes. I think the eyes, in and of themselves, are actually pretty spot on, I think what seems "off" (At least to me), are the eyebrows. Look at the pic below, the center pic, and those seem more accurate. The thicker, more defined look, definitely the way to go.

Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: Deaths Jester on June 01, 2017, 07:03:07 PM
I'm beginning to think that the problem I'm having with the eyes - both on Siryn and on Dani Moonstar - revolves around the fact that they seem...lifeless.  They just seem dead to me - Vamp had that problem too - not vibrant and full of life like some of the other eyes I've done in the past - while not perfect, Boom Boom's worked better even if they were hidden behind a pair of glasses.  It's this style I'm tinkering with, I think..but I'm not quite sure...going to have to continue to tinker with female skins to see if I can get it right.
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: daglob on June 01, 2017, 07:48:26 PM
Looking at a blow up of these two you might make the eyes lighter and add a white highlight. I use the line tool and try to do just one pixel. At times this may make them cartoony, but you can adjust between the shades and see if you can make it work.
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: SickAlice on June 02, 2017, 04:25:30 PM
A trick, and I'm not sure why I forget to use it anymore myself, is put a little speckle on the reflection texture where the eyes would be. Human eyeballs are naturally moist and that will give your works a "living" effect.
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: Deaths Jester on June 10, 2017, 04:47:45 PM
I went back to my books and tutorials and dug around for answers on the eye problems. While this setup looks okay on a male mesh, the female meshes show off the fact that the underlying shape and build of the eye are just a tad off. Add to that the fact that the eyelashes are a bit too...cartoony (?)/solid draws even more attention to it.

I'm going to have to pay attention to that and spend some time with my books on the next female skin I do (will be a bit as WB was having comp probs last I talked to him so I'm looking at a few other skins at the moment) to make sure I get things right.

So, I decided to tinker with my style a bit and see how realistic I could make a face with Painter 2015, FF's graphic engine, and a mouse (because that's all I use is a mouse).  What follows is still extremely early, I've still got another 3 or more hours to work on the face (already spent 2 and a half to get here plus an hour or so staring at a tutorial, trying to decide how to recreate what I saw with nothing but a mouse).  Anyways, still more work to do...thus the slightly blurry look also on some areas...

Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion - Refining, Refining, Refining
Post by: Deaths Jester on August 11, 2017, 01:41:25 PM
An hour and a half or two hours further in and it looks like the eyes nose and mouth are pretty well set..though there might be some minor tweaks to do and some very light highlights/warmth passes on certain sections.  Still quite a bit to go...am avoiding putting eyebrows and hair on this right now because I know that realistic blonde hair is going to kick my arse and take forever (even masters of art agree with me on that).  Also avoiding texturizing the finished parts just yet...want to make sure everything fits together perfectly before the final few passes.

Probably another couple of hours of refinement followed by an hour or so of tightening it all up (not counting the extra hours I'll probably spend staring at it and books/tutorials trying to figure out stuff - the horrors of being self taught and mouse-only-centric) and the face section will be pretty much done...hopefully...

Ok, now I have to ask. What size TGA/DDS are you working with that allows you to get that kind of detail?
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: Deaths Jester on August 13, 2017, 04:16:33 AM
I work at 512 by 512 almost exclusively. Been using that size ever since I started skinning for FF almost 15 years ago.

It's really less about the size - I could do this in 256 by 256 and get similar results - and more about time and stroke opacity. I've spent a lot of time zoomed in on the face laying strokes set to 5 or 10% opacity, layer after layer (current count for the file is somewhere around 150 layers or more but only 100 are the face).

From the top down

I've still got to go in and put in the shading from the hair on the face, some texture work on the face, and a minor hue/saturation pass on the flesh before I'm done with the head.  Once I finish that up, I'm going to take a few days off from this and get some other stuff done (start up to the tablet piece, redesign the outfit for this character, write some other stuff, sleep...stuff) before coming back to this...

Post-edit: Hair shows where FF's graphic engine fails for realism.  Being unable to create strands and such kills some of the realism, unhappily.  Oh well...probably the closest I can come to.

I'm still just blown away by the level of detail that you have using a mouse.
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: Deaths Jester on August 17, 2017, 12:45:50 AM
Remember, CB, I've been painting with a mouse for a LONG time (self taught on it, in fact) so I've had time to experiment and find means to create what I'm looking for. For something that might take an artist with a styllus one motion might take me longer and are more complex/against the grain (my most often used brush for all my work is the airbrush - a brush most folks advise against using or use only for a few minor things) but they work for me. I actually don't think I could transition to a styllus now because I'd have to trash years of experience and start off brand new.

Edit: I've also got a whole collection of books and tutorials that I can drag up and study. Most are for Photoshop CS and onwards and wacoms but I've learned over time how to adapt what's presented to Painter, Photoshop 7, and a mouse.

That hair and jaw are looking super great! The textures, the textures...

I just have to ask (because I can't even remember) but can you work higher than 512 or is that FF's limit? Because there's just that small amount of blur in the face and I think your stuff is so detailed it would totally benefit from going up a size.
Just my opinion! It's looking fantastic though.

You can run up to 1024 x 1024 but I dislike working at that size....512 squared is a happy medium for me and like I said, I could do this in 256 squared and still get similar results. I just prefer 512 because I've never had any problems with it fitting onto any mesh..sometimes when you go smaller or larger you can have either bleed over or blank spots show up on certain meshes.

HA! Dorian Graves! I always loved Unko's designs. For the suit, have you consider a different skope? I used a variation of GNI's models plus some skoping of course for my version. I think it adds additional depth to the design that the male_suit lacks due to it's flatness.

Well, you folks are right to think she has something to do with Wolvie. She's faced him before - actually made her official "comeback" against him after not being used for quite a long time - but he's not the one she was originally known to enjoy tormenting...

Also, you've got to remember...I skin obscure characters...esp concerning the alphabet list.  Tyger Tiger, Mariko, and Yukio aren't exactly obscure enough.

Ain't I a stinker? :P

Here's how Yi Yang looks finished:

Note: In Wolverine: The Best There Is (which is where I took this costume/outfit from), Yi Yang wears water sleeves reach to the floor.

Picture of said sleeves:
Spoiler: ShowHide
(https://i.imgur.com/tP57OQM.jpg)

As we don't have the graphics engine nor skopable parts to recreate those correctly (we'd need something that allowed me to make the fabric after the red band to flow like water and move about with her movements - including falling backwards down her arm like the water sleeve on her left arm - the one on her hip - is doing), I instead change it slightly and made those water sleeves just normal arm sleeves.  While it's not a perfect substitute, it's better than the clean arm look and closer to how Yi Yang appeared.

The face isn't great - it lacks the emotion that I normally try for - but that's a combination of rust and this being the first time I've actually skinned a female_versatile-esque head created by  Grenadier - I'm more used to the skinning the female_versatile heads that Ren uses or the regular female_basic setup.  Bit of a learning curve there...

I think its fantastic! I understand how frustating it is for long fabrics in the game (been trying to skope a workable imperial guard from star wars for a while), but i think your decision with the sleeves was a great one.

Another WIP, another one that fills in missing Alphabet Villain List (for those wondering, the letters missing are D, G, I, L, N, U, and Z..so that might give you an idea on who this is).  Still got the "bustier", hair, shades, belt, and face to finish - that and I might darken the green a bit on her (am unsure at the moment). Anyways, let's see if anyone can guess this one:

One single hint (aside from the missing letters in the alphabet): This character was part of a over-arching story in one of Marvel comics that was dropped abruptly when Marvel - out of the blue - changed writer and artist mid-story.  She wasn't used by the new creative group and has languished in comic limbo ever since...

Would've had to been DD # 363 or 364 under Karl Kesel's writing because when Joe Kelly took over DD at issue 365 he dropped the character completely. Was a bit interesting that he did that seeing as she had been a part of the Mr Fear story arc that Marvel had going at the time and Kelly continued building up. After Kesel left, Insomnia disappeared into comic book limbo - unused to this day.

Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: Deaths Jester on May 23, 2018, 12:38:43 PM
Yeah, the nose is a bit much. Part of that has to do with the mesh I used (I had to rework the wireframe a few times). As for the emblem,  I tried putting it on but it ended up having two stingers due to the mirroring of textures on the hood piece. I felt that if I couldn't recreate the emblem as it appeared in the comic that it was best to leave it off...bit of a personal choice there.

I can't believe it's been almost 11 years since I first created this character and sparked my twenty character collab with Carr.  Back then he looked like this:

Well, I decided it was time to revisit him and get him closer to real-life German WW2 look..so now he looks like this:

Okay a few things I've got to point out:

1) You may notice that the uniform and most of his gear has a green tint to it compared tot eh older one - that's intentional. The WW2 German Waffen-SS (which Stahlhelm is wearing) and Army uniforms were issued in field grey (the Americans called them field green) which was a warm grey-green colour originally.  Once the war started and supplies started to get low, the German uniforms took on more of a grey colour with a slight green tint to it (much like this one) due in large part to a lack of good wool (which lead to an increase in rayon in the uniforms) and dye.  So this colour is actually a lot closer to the real world uniform during the war.

2) The pack is not historically correct.  Not until the very end of WW2 did the Germans start carrying backpack type packs like I have shown here. Instead most of their packs were assorted pieces clipped/hooked together to form a pack which was then clipped to troopers' military-issued braces/suspenders.  I felt that Stahlhelm, being a bit more mobile bound, would eschew that pack form for the backpack set up.  The horseshoe roll - the cylinder atop the pack - is actually historically correct as many of the troops carried a blanket or their overcoat - Stahlhelm carries his overcoat - this way while marching.

3) Notice the lack of medals on Stahlhem's uniform even though he should be sporting a ton of them?  That's intentional.  During WW2, the German military encouraged the troops to wear their awards and medals to help bolster morale. An unseen side effect of that though, was that often times the troops wore the awards into combat thus destroying the use of camo (if provided) or at the least giving the Allies information on what experience/specialties their opponents had.  I felt that Stahlhelm would be ordered NOT to wear his awards for that reason.  Add to that, I felt that Stahlhelm himself would be a morale booster to the troops anyways.

4) The lack of refl on the new helmet - Pre-war German forces wore polished helmets in field grey but once the war began, they swapped over to helmets that were painted with a matte field-grey colour.  Thus no refl would show up on matte painted metal.

Alright, I think that is enough history for today.

Okay..and now a tease:

That's right, check out that awesome skin/Skope of the The Key!  He's starring in a brand new arc of my JLA campaign, and DJ really outdid himself with that great piece!  And he wonders why I keep hassling him to do things for me!

As for this new Stahlhelm, he is actually in the DCUG too!  Haha, apparently DJ forgot that he gave me permission to include his incredibly great looking evil superteam in my JLA/JSA crossover.  They get pride of place in a few missions, and I'll have to update this fellow now to this new excellent skin!

I love all of the historical accuracy and background packed into this guy!  I'm a big history buff, and this is super cool!  Wonderful, wonderful detail work, both in terms of accuracy and in terms of texture!

So you've got Stahlhelm, Meer Tuefel, der Zauberer, die Eisen Soldat, and Panzermann but not Geistblitz or die Faust?  That's very weird seeing as everyone listed came before I ever did die Eisen Soldat.....he was one of the last ones I originally did....and I could've sworn I've kept everyone but Panzermann and Stahlhelm from being released anywhere (Panzermann and Stahlhelm were released at FRP for a time)....

Also add Herr Gummiband....

Right!  I forgot them, but yep, they're in there as well!  :D.  I remember when you were making them.  It was right around when I had started working on the JLA/JSA crossover, and I was plotting the WWII portions.  The characters were so well designed and so interesting that I decided I really wanted to include them.  I suppose I probably asked about the time that you had finished.  I didn't use Car's, as they were more slick and superhero looking, more like a modern team, while yours seemed more period-approrpriate, historically fitting.  I like how they work in those couple of missions, plus they provide some fun RR foes for the WWII characters.

IF you look at this one and back and Stahlhelm, you can see the point I was making about the awards/medals.  Unlike Stahlhelm, this guy wears his medals out loud and proud.  They are:  Knight's Cross (around collar area), Iron Cross Second Class (ribbon in button hole), Silver Close Combat Medal (over left pocket; awarded for 30 consecutive days of "hand-to-hand" combat without armour support), Silver Wound Badge (left side of left pocket; wounded 3 to 4 times in combat), Iron Cross First Class (center left pocket), and the Silver Anti-Partisan Medal (right left pocket; awarded for 30 consecutive days of combat against a partisan unit).  Also note the shoulder boards, Stahlhelm shows that he is a Captain in the Waffen-SS Infantry while this fellow is a Technical Sergeant  in the Waffen-SS Combat Engineer Unit (they were the only ones who regularly issued flamethrowers).  I've still got some work to do, as you can see..but this guy will be interesting when I get him done..I hope...

...hint hint...I don't always post wips here...sometimes I post them over at the Freedom Reborn Discord Server Tomato set up (see his post in General Discussion)... :D

EDIT: I have a correction to make on the fire bug's award info. The silver Anti-Partisan medal was for 50 days of combatting "partisans". It also turns out that what the Germans considered "combating partisans" also included removal of "underirables" (read: Jewish, Gypsies, ect) within recently occupied regions. This was very new info to me...had no idea that they awarded this medal for that. That combind with the flamethrower on firebug could make him a bit more sinister than I originally believed but I'm not going to go that way with his bio even though it would make it that more fulfilling when you kick his arse in game with a patriotic character. Will say that only one other of this collection will wear this medal (because of how the character fits into the team) and it will be for fighting partisans only (same with firebug) - I'm not going to include such evil in these characters, no matter how historically correct it maybe. If not for how the other character fits as an actual partisan fighter, I wouldn't include the medal at all knowing the full info on what it was awarded for. These skins aren't made to celebrate the Nazis and what they did. They are made to be beaten up in game because they are Nazis and are evil. Okay, back to regular show...
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion - Nacht
Post by: Deaths Jester on July 18, 2018, 06:39:56 PM
Okay, new member of the team..kinda.  When Carr and I first collaborated together on this Nazi team, we had a list of about 20 archetypes that we'd put together that pretty much encompassed the mainstay archetypes that both the JLA/JSA and Avengers had (ie: The archer - Green Arrow/Hawkeye; The Bruiser - Wildcat/Wolverine, ect).  From there we split the list in half (I got 10, Carr got 10) and went from there developing the team.  Right now you are probably wondering what this has to do with this new post, right? Well, back when we were doing the collab, Carr pulled the Detective/Stealth Specialist archetype (Batman/Moon Knight) and created:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Night Owl or Nachteule (Thanks to Cyberburn for saving these pics from back then)

Well, since I'm doing my own images of them, I decided to take that same archetype and create, Nacht:

Awards

Now there are a few things to call out on Nacht that need explaining:

1) The awards - he wears the Iron Cross 1st class (middle of pocket), Iron Cross second class (button hole ribbon), and the Silver Anti-Partisan badge (50 days of fighting partisans and the last one of these I'm doing after discovering more about what else this award was given out for - as mentioned above).

2) The coat - First up, the black coat is to represent he is a member of the Gestapo (as does the SD within a black diamond patch - the white piping around that patch denotes he's a member of Gestapo and no the regular SD).  While the Gestapo didn't actually have uniform (inside Greater Germany they wore plain clothes/undercover and in occupied regions wore the SD uniform), they often wore black leather overcoats because it provided them a little extra protection while they were undercover and looked "non-conspicuous" amongst the regular populace. Normally officers - they could purchase the coat in their branch colour at their own expense - weren't allowed to wear insignia on leather coat (aside from their shoulder boards).  Nacht,as you can see, breaks that convention.  Reasoning behind that revolves around the fact that this is actually his costume..not his uniform.  Nacht is the type of man that is the man of 1,000 faces - he spends all his time in the field in disguise, only putting on this outfit when he must report to a commanding officer or some important meeting.  Thus, when he appears in this outfit, he wears insignia to denote his branch (Gestapo due to the diamond SD badge with piping) and section (SS per the eagle on the sleeve).  In the field, he relies on his sidekick (coming later..maybe) to correspond with the soldiers/commanders and to attest that he is who he says he is (the sidekick wears a uniform most of the time).

3) The colour of the uniform - you'll notice that instead using field grey on the uniform, I used a grey with a bluish-green tint to it.  Even though Hollywood normally portrays the Gestapo wearing the black SS uniform, that uniform was discontinued in 1938/39 and the full stock was recalled by Himmler.  The black uniform stock was stripped of insignia and then handed out to the non-Germanic volunteer SS units.  The rest of the SS started wearing the field grey of the Waffen-SS except for the Panzer divisions and the police. The police/RHSA wore the grey with a blue-green tint coloured uniform pictured and what I tried to exhibit in the skin. Well, pictures I've seen of the SD uniforms show them having that bluish-green tint at least:

Spoiler: ShowHide
(https://i.imgur.com/NJCLlBM.jpg)

SD Uniforms

4) He wears the SS-Sturmbannführer (equivalent to Major in US ranks) collar board on the right. The blank collar board on the left was something that was only worn by members of the SD/RHSA...it helped separate them from the other SS-based commands.

5) No shoulder boards - didn't find a mesh piece that would work with the trenchcoat and not show up underneath as well...so no shoulder boards.  Besides, he rarely wears this outfit anyway.

6) The mask - as you know, most of my original characters don't wear masks.  They just don't seem very realistic to me most of the time but for someone like Nacht - whose identity needs to stay hidden to all but a select few - it works.  Thus a mask...

Okay, that's enough of me rambling....

Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion

That's some crazy historical detail you're doing there. Great skin.
Title: Re: DJ's place of preversion
Post by: Deaths Jester on July 18, 2018, 11:53:21 PM
Yeah, it is a lot of historical detail but it's best to do it so I don't run into inaccuracies or trouble like the anti-partisan badge. If I had just done a little wider research on it, I would've never used it because of the absolulety horrorific actions that it was some times rewarded for (not that fighting the Resistance wasn't horrific enough but in war both sides fight partisan forces...no side should be liquidating people because they don't match certain requirements or rewarding awards for that.) Now I know more and will not use it again and make sure to lean the bios of the two with the badge away from that track and more towards actual partisan-based battles instead.

Alright, here's what I've got done on Nacht's sidekick:

Spoiler: ShowHide
(https://i.imgur.com/Qnaz4ZY.jpg)

Tease

Still got a long way to go but let's get the history details out of the way now so later you guys can appreciate the full skin without all my rambling.

1) As you can tell, she's wearing the SD uniform in that blueish-green grey that I used on Nacht also.

2) The left sleeve - starting at the shoulder we have: the SS eagle (denoting she's a member of the SS); the Private, First Class pip (or lozenge as the Americans called it) which I will get to in a minute; the SD diamond without piping (that denotes she is a member of the SD proper and not a Gestapo or such); the SD-Hauptamt cuff title which denotes she is a member of the SD Main Security Office Staff  (a high ranking staff position for people within the SD; like being a staff member to Himmler or such type position)

3) Ribbon bar (above left pocket, from left to right) -
SS Long Service Badge - Awarded for extended service within the SS; has four grades of 4, 12, 18, and 25 years of services - this is the 4 year
grade, I think...not really a distinguisher for the long service ribbons, unlike the medals
Sudentenland Medal - Awarded to all military personnel who marched into the Sudetenland on October 18, 1938
Anschluss Medal - Awarded to those who marched into and annexed Austria on May 1, 1938
Memel Medal - last of the occupation Medals Awarded; Presented to all personnel who distinguished themselves in actions related to the annexation
of the Klaipeda Region of Lithuania on March 22, 1939

4) The badge on the left pocket, is the NSDAP/Nazi Party badge denoting she is a member of the Nazi Party (not everyone within the Army, Navy, SS, ect were actual members of the NSDAP)

5) Her collar boards show her to hold the rank of SS-Mann, or Private (the striped black and white trimmed collar boards were issued to Privates from 1934-1940 before the trim was gotten rid of).  As mentioned, the pip on her sleeve denotes she's a Private, First Class.  Now, you are probably wondering why she has such a low rank?  In truth, it's amazing she holds a rank within the SS because women - except in certain areas of the Luftwaffe (those that manned AA guns) and the Signals Corp on the Army though both groups were viewed as inferior to the men - were viewed as auxiliaries and not given ranks.  The German Nazis viewed women more as - for lack of a better term - brood mares (they even had an award in varying grades - plain for 3 or 4, silver for 6 to 8, ect - for mothers that had multiple children).  So, the fact that this one has a rank in the SS is a major thing and they would most likely believe her when she attested to Nacht being Nacht.

6) Even though she probably should have at least an Iron Cross Second Class due to her potentially helping Nacht earn his Iron Cross First Class, she possess no Iron Cross.  The reason is because the Iron Cross was only ever awarded to one female - Hannah Reitsch, a test pilot who received both classes - during the whole war.

Okay...that's enough history for now..off I go to more skinning...

That's an excellent way of articulating this Pod.

And DJ, considering her partner wears a full face Mask, I'd be interested in seeing a version of her with the Domino Mask, or at least some sort of Mask (Maybe as an Alt Skin?).

While Nebel currently looks breathtaking, it kind of feels like she's the Robin to Nacht's Batman, and while Robin is running around without his Mask, it leaves Batman's identity open for speculation.

But how would the German military officials know that she is who she says she is then?  Bad enough that they have Nacht running around all incognito/man of a thousand faces almost all the time, now Nebel should be that way too?  She's the official face for Nacht when he's in the field and can attest to who is and isn't Nacht.  And Nacht only wears his mask when he is in an official meeting or such with German officials/commanding officers (mostly when he is called back to HQ to report or such)..so he's more often dressed in something else with a different face..that isn't his.  But fine...I'll look at the domino mask again...I tried it once and wasn't happy with it....

Personally I’d give her a scar or other facial disfigurement and that’s how she’s recognised throughout the regime. So even people who don’t know her will know her reputation and telltale markings. Really nice skins and you’ve definatly brought your ideas to life.  :D

I think part of the problem is everyone is thinking of Nebel as Robin to Nacht's Batman. Because she's a member of the SD, she's more like Microchip to Punisher or Oracle to Batman instead. Someone who is more about pumping info from informants, digging thru files, and informing Nazi police/officials where to be when Nacht brings down some "anti-Germany disodents" and who NOT to shot at (id Nacht for them) than fighting side-by-side with Nacht (though wien needed see can). She has no need of a mask to be that type of sidekick...in fact, it might help her to not have one (less likely to draw attention and ppl might not connect her as easily to Nacht...just a random "maybe" thought there).

I'll drag up some history about the SD that shows why I see her that way (more large blocks of history text) and post it some time tomorrow along with a masked version and a tease.

I like her without the mask.
To be honest I first thought of characters such as Margo Lane or Dian Belmont, though without the sexualized connotations of that.
Maybe like... a secretary?

Anyhow, amazing amount of research put into these characters. Love that.

Alright...here's how Nebel looks masked:

Still looks bland to me, though.  And because I'm going to be paraphrasing a lot of different texts and books, I'm just going to give the run down on the SD in a quote:

Quote
SD, or Sicherheitsdienst, was the intelligence agency of the SS and the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany. The organization was the first Nazi intelligence organization to be established and was considered a sister organization with the Gestapo, which the SS had infiltrated heavily after 1934. Between 1933 and 1939, the SD was administered as an independent SS office, after which it was transferred to the authority of the Reich Main Security Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt; RSHA), as one of its seven departments/offices. Its first director, Reinhard Heydrich, intended for the SD to bring every single individual within the Third Reich's reach under "continuous supervision." They were tasked with the detection of actual or potential enemies of the Nazi leadership and the neutralization of this opposition as the action against the SA demonstrated. To fulfill this task, the SD created an organization of agents and informants throughout the Reich and later throughout the occupied territories, all part of the development of an extensive SS state and a totalitarian regime without parallel. The organization consisted of a few hundred full-time agents and several thousand informants.  Given the nature of the intelligence operations assigned to the SD, there were clear delineations between what constituted a full member (Mitglieder) of the SD and those who were considered "associates" (Mitarbeiter) with a further subset for clerical support personnel (typists, file clerks, etc.) who were connoted as V-persons (Vertrauensleute). All SD personnel, whether simply associates or full members were required to swear an oath of secrecy, had to meet all the requirements for SS membership, were assigned SD code numbers (Chiffre Nummer) and if they were above the level of V-person"they had to carry an SD identification card.
Part and parcel to intelligence operations, the SD carefully tracked foreign opinion and criticism of Nazi policies, censoring when necessary and likewise publishing hostile political cartoons in the SS weekly magazine, Das Schwarze Korps. An additional task assigned to the SD and the Gestapo was keeping tabs on the morale of the German population at large, which meant they were charged to "carefully supervise the political health of the German ethnic body" and once any symptoms of "disease and germs" appeared, it was their job to "remove them by every appropriate means." Regular reports - ranging from opinion polls, press dispatches, and information bulletins were established. These were monitored and reviewed by then head of the Inland-SD, Otto Ohlendorf (responsible for intelligence and security within Germany) and the former Heidelberg professor and SD member Reinhard Höhn, all designed to control and assess the "life domain" or Lebensgebiet of the German population. Gathered information was then distributed by the SD through secret internal political reports entitled Meldungen aus dem Reich (reports from the Reich) to the upper echelons of the Nazi Party, enabling Hitler's regime to evaluate the general morale and attitude of the German people so it could be timely manipulated by the Nazi propaganda machine.

In 1938, the SD was made the intelligence organization for the State as well as for the Party, supporting the Gestapo and working with the General and Interior Administration. They were mainly the information-gathering agency, and the Gestapo, and to a degree the Criminal Police (Kriminalpolizei or Kripo), was the executive agency of the political police system. Both SD and Gestapo were under Heydrich's control and answered to Himmler in his dual capacity of Chief of the Police and Reichsfuhrer-SS. Nevertheless, the Criminal Police kept a level of independence since its structure was longer-established.

SD men represented no pathological or psychically susceptible group. Few were wild or extreme Nazi fanatics. In those respects they were 'ordinary men'. Yet in most other respects, they were an extraordinary mix of men, drawn together by a unique mix of missions. Along with members of the Gestapo, SD personnel were "regarded with a mixture of fear and foreboding," and people wanted as little to do with them as possible. Belonging to the security apparatus of the Third Reich obviously had its advantages but it was also fraught with occupationally related social disadvantages as well, and if post-war descriptions of the SD by historians are any indication, membership therein implied being a part of a "ubiquitous secret society" which was "sinister" and a "messenger of terror" not just for the German population, but within the "ranks of the Nazi Party itself."

As you can see, SD were really the information specialists - they had their informants plus gathered all the info that came in from the Gestapo and police.  True they would go out in the field and they had the ability to arrest anyone at anytime if they suspected of "foul doings" but that was a smaller section of what the SD did.  Why would someone who was viewed as an "ordinary person" working as - for lack of a better term - one of many information brokers (SD were more than that but in the end Nebel fits into that idea a bit) for the Nazi party need a mask?

EDIT: Also, unlike the group that Car and I did, this group is going to have more supporting personnel involved - not everyone is going to be a front line/in the filed type.  Car and I were just pumping out characters that we though were cool and fit some idea we had at the beginning of our collab but as I got deeper into it, certain characters started crying to be more supporting-types (Herr Gummiband was the first one that started crying the loudest even though I had already skinned him as a bit of a front lien type...when you see the redesign you'll see a major difference).  Nebel is one of those newer supporting character ideas....Geisteblitz, Herr Gummiband, and der Zauberer (partially) when/if they get a redesign will also be more along the lines of supporting characters than the front line group they originally appeared as.  Stay around and you'll see what I mean if I ever get around to do those....or such..

Okay..now here be the tease:

1943 Awards up-close

Just a short work over on what everything is historically with the uniforms:

1938

Uniform - dated around August 1938, the Allgemeine-SS (General SS) were still wearing the black uniforms and Nazi Party arm badge, they would change to the field grey the next year.  The white officer belt was issued only to those who served in the Liebstrande Adolf Hitler division

Ribbon Bar (left to right) - 1913-1918 Iron Cross, Honour Cross of World War I (aside from the WW I Iron Cross this was the only official service decoration from WWI the Nazi's allowed WWI vets to wear), SS 12-year long service medal, Anschluss Medal (entry into Austria), Sudenteland Medal (Entry into the Sudetenland)

Awards - Golden Party Badge of Honour (center of breast pocket; awarded by Hitler to the first 100,000 NSDAP members as well as those who performed outstanding services for the NSDAP); WWI Black Wound Badge (bottom left side of breast pocket; wounded once or twice);1914-1918 Iron Cross First Class (WWI Iron Cross); Veteran in Service with the Army or Police Chevron (left sleeve; mostly awarded to those who served in WWI)

Rank - Obersturmbanfurher (Lt Colonel equivalent) in the Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler Division (Adofl Hitler cuff title - right sleeve cuff; the Liebstandarte division started out as Hitler's bodyguard division under the command of Sepp Deitrich. Later on they would form one of the first and one of the more successful divisions of the Waffen-SS)

1943

Uniform- dated around January 1943, by this time all SS member (whether originally Allgemeine-SS or Waffen-SS) wore the field grey uniform of the Waffen-SS.  Those that were not members of the Waffen-SS beforehand also ended up receiving ranks within the organization as well. By this time, everyone was also issued the black leather belt (officer's received the one shown).

Ribbon bar (left to right) - 1913-1918 Iron Cross, WWII Iron Cross First Class, Honour Cross of WWI, SS 12-year Long Service Medal, Anschulss Medal, Sudenteland Medal, Memel Medal (Entry into Memel Territory of Lithuania), Eastern Front 1941 to 1942 medal (Russian Front participation medal)

Awards - Knight's Cross with Silver Oakleaves (collar; the Knight's Cross came in five grades, this is the second which is above the regular Knight's Cross); Golden Party Badge of Honour (middle of breast pocket), Silver Wound Badge (lower left side of breast pocket; WWI wounds were counted as previous service wounds under the Nazi empire once war broke out); 1914 and 1939 Iron Cross Bar Set (awarded tot hose who had received the Iron Cross First Class in WWI and again in WWII); Golden Assault Badge (awarded to those who participated in 6 separate infantry or tank assaults); 2 Black Tank Destruction Strips (one atop the other on left sleeve; Black badges meant the recipient had destroyed a single tank without any help from armoured units, they'd stack them one over the other until they reached five tank destruction and then award a single gold strip); Veteran in Service with the Army or Police Chevron (lower left sleeve)

Rank - Brigadefuhrer/Generalmajor der Waffen-SS (Brigadier General equivalent) serving as a staff member to the SS High Command (the Reichfuhrung-SS cuff title - right sleeve cuff; those who served as staff members to Himmler and other SS High Command members wore this cuff title.  By this time, der Zauberer has moved away from serving in the field and taken over Karl Maria Wiligut's position as Himmler's personal magus (moving into more of a support role, as previously alluded to). Wiligut held the position until 1939 when "health problems" and the fact that the previously confidentially sealed papers showing Wiligut had previous spent time in a psychiatric ward after being deemed insane were released to the public in 1938 by Karl Wolff forced him to retire.  Himmler knew Wiligut's history but had kept the papers sealed from the public to avoid humiliation.)

Still got a ton of work to do on it...got two faces and two set of hands to do and a try out on some new skin colours..maybe...

Only thing historical to mention on die Faust is the shirt/vest.  Each branch of the German Armed Forces has what they called "Sports Uniforms" - they came in three categories: track suits, workout wear, and swim wear -  that they used for sports events and PT that had the forces emblem plastered on it - Luftwaffe had their flying eagle; SS had the SS runes; the SA had a fancy SA emblem; The Wehrmacht/army (which die Faust wears) had the steel eagle.  So, what you see die Faust wearing is the sports vest from the workout wear of the Wehrmacht instead of the Wehrmacht coat - with those muscles, he'd be really constricted in a uniform coat.

Got a few minutes to scan the forums and had to comment on these.

I agree that your uniforms and clothing are great. But the face work is incredible. I especially like der Zauberer. He looks like he is slowly turning into a drained husk from using his awful powers. Fantastic work there.
Die Faust looks like he is perpetually angry/depressed to me. His frown is very deep.
I forgot about Nebal. I like her unmasked. But either way would work.

Once I get the base skope and skin done for Sgt Vincent Velcro, BG will probably contact you to see if you can work your animation magic on it, DM. That will be awhile though as free time is at a minimum at the moment.

Always takes time DJ especially when it's a hobby we allocate in our real lives and all the drudgery. Everything has a Chapter 22. Likewise you take time because you try and do it the right way and you mind the details, that's all. Like a painting on canvas or a sculpture also takes time, a month easy as well. Just saying, don't diss yourself. You do fine work and you're an inspiration here as one of the classic members goes. You were one that inspired me to try and do more than just flat colored textures on my stuff, I'm otherwise just a modeler. And animations...yeah, got me there. Manually doing those is time consuming. Though when I say a year mostly it was because life had demands as does yours is all. Had a lot of family issues going on in short and I was on the road for months helping them out. So the time put in comes out to less. I just don't like seeing people down on themselves is all mind you. I wouldn't tolerate someone else talking down about any of you so it's hard to get with you coming down on yourself, you know? Anyways fantastic stuff as always and I always look forward to seeing more.

Crosspost from Discord:

Quote
So my current plan is to try and do ten GA characters (five heroes, five villains) for this whole thing and then probably return to retirement.  There are those interested but not a lot.  That and the fact I'm running into the same problem that DaGlob ran into with certain characters I'd like to do but can't - missing pieces to skope to make them work, lack of teen/kid meshes, ect.  So this puts me at trying to find stuff that I can do - luckily I only got five more to do (four villains and one hero).

I also got two MLJ/Archie Comics villains done. First up is Baron Gestapo who faced off against Steel Sterling in Zip and Jackpot comics. And as usual, large pics follow:

Two more villains down, leaving one hero and one villain till returning to retirement. (Big pictures follow as usual)

First up from MLJ Comics, is the Black Knight.  He fought Steel Sterling in Zip Comics #1 and was believed dead in Zip Comics #2 but....he would reappear using different code names twice - once as Dr Yar and once a the Radium King.  Both times he reverted back to the Black Knight name once Steel confronted him.

Awesome stuff, DJ! It's really neat seeing these obscure characters done so well.

Any chance of seeing them released?

They've already been sent to 'mato for releasing.  When he gets a chance to get them up, he'll do just that.

Never having read about Major Victory, I can only assume he was a reluctant or very morose hero. He looks so depressed.

I literally laughed out loud at Anti-Shock Gibson. I guess he needed to be associated with Nazis.

Your face work is inspiring. I know Bill would have loved them.

Thank you.

Sorry to hear that you're going back to retirement, I enjoyed this tribute to Daglob. Great skins of those obscure characters.

I've posted on all of these on the Discord, but it bears repeating.  Your work is gorgeous, man, and I'm loving all of these guys!
