Awesome, and it's a great book.  Not actually many illustrations though, if I'm remembering correctly.

When I heard it in the news (I listen to the New York Times and Boston Globe podcasts) they didint even mention Dave, so I guess the hype is centered around Neil's writing. Still good news, I like his stuff.

I need to read this. And Coraline. But congrats to both of them, that's an awesome award to win.

I loved this book tremendously, and I'm glad to see it get this recognition.

BWPS: Yes, you should. Coraline is excellent too, and while I didn't find it scary, it was terrifically compelling.

The Newberry award is for writing, so I imagine the illustrator would not be recognized.

I heard NG on the Minnesota Public Radio (He lives in western Wisconsin, which is practically a suburb or the Twin Cities).  It was so cool - he was totally blown away by the award and practically speechless.  His comment (and I tend to believe it) is that the Newberry Award essentially defines the cannon of American Juvie lit and the award all but guarantees that folks will still be reading him after he's dead.
